Planning Cat in the Hat Birthday Party

My son’s birthday was very recent, and he loves the cat in the hat. Every toy that he would call his favorite is Dr. Seuss inspired.

My wife and I were talking about redecorating his room, and suddenly, I had an inspiration. We moved all of his things into the guest room, and told him that we were decorating his room, but that he couldn’t go in.

While he was staying in the guest room, we painted all 4 walls of his room with a Dr. Seuss mural. We had the Lorax, Cat in the Hat, Whoville, and just about every other character that you can think of.

After I’d drawn the characters, my wife and I painted them in the true colors, and began to slowly move his things back in. We first moved his white bookcase, and gave it a quick, Dr. Seuss style paint job, then did the same with his nightstand and lamps.

Once those were in, we were ready to set up for a birthday party, which was coming up in a couple days. My wife made Cat in the hat style hats out of basic cardboard and felt. We found the design online for a top hat made of the same materials and changed it just a little bit.

The punch bowl was blue punch with candy fish in it, to appear like the fish in the book. There were red and white balloons everywhere, and we tried to find table cloths and that sort of decoration in basic colors that one would find in a Dr. Seuss book.

We even hired someone to play the cat in the hat in costume.

When everyone arrived, we had a tv playing cat in the hat, and they were brought into the bedroom, where I was sitting in a chair waiting for them. I then read them a modified version of the cat in the hat that included all of their names, and at the end of the story, the entertainer in the cat in the hat costume came in.

They all played for a while, then it was time to eat. We had Deviled eggs, where the yolk had been dyed to be green, and then there were ham sandwiches.

Everyone enjoyed them, then it was time for a craft. We all made “Thing 1” and “Thing 2” shirts that had each person’s name on them. After the craft was done, we played a game called “The Cat in the Hat knows a lot about that”, and had cupcakes that were decorated to look like “Thing 1 and Thing 2”.

We had initially planned to have the cupcakes outside, but it was raining, which worked out perfectly, because that is exactly what happened in the book. At the end of the party, we were able to get the children to help clean up, because THAT even happened in the book, then we all sat down and rested while watching “The Lorax” movie. Most of the kids fell asleep, while waiting for their parents to arrive.

Since that party, every time my son goes to a birthday party, he compares his birthday to it, and tells us how much better his was. On top of that, our son’s room is now fully decorated cat in the hat, and the mural was a wonderful addition to the room.
